Heat practice

The heat is part of the schedule

West Texas summers are hot, so the day is built around the cool of the morning. These are the routines.

  • Water at every break

Bottles are filled before the first block and again at every break, and a counselor checks that each camper is drinking.

  • Shade between blocks

A shade structure stands beside the main field, and campers rest there for the water and snack break.

  • Fields in the morning

The field blocks are for the cool part of the morning. After lunch, camp moves into the gym.

  • Indoor days

On a very hot day the morning blocks move into the gym too, and we text families before camp opens.

The team

The adults on the field

A coach and a teacher run camp, and a counselor walks with every group. Here are four of them.

  • Octaviano Vaca, director and head coach, in a navy fleece holding a small bell on the steps of a hall

    Octaviano Vaca

    Director and head coach

Octaviano coached high-school soccer and track for many years, and he runs camp on fields like the ones he coached on. He leads the morning circle and the Friday family game, and he speaks Spanish and English with families.

  • Sergia Amparan, co-director, in an olive vest and a lanyard, arms crossed, in a pine clearing

    Sergia Amparan

    Co-director and teacher

Sergia teaches elementary school during the year, and she plans the camp day: groups, lunch, quiet games and the choose-your-game hour. She answers the phone and speaks Spanish and English.

  • Yasuo Shibata, field coach, in a grey hooded sweatshirt and a plain cap, seated on a log

    Yasuo Shibata

    Field coach

Yasuo runs the soccer and flag football blocks. He starts every drill with its simplest version and adds one step at a time, so a camper who has never played can join in from the first block.

  • Shamika Burch, gym coach, in a white t-shirt and a blue bandana, in an open pavilion

    Shamika Burch

    Gym coach

Shamika leads basketball and volleyball in the gym. She keeps the older groups' games friendly, and she teaches the younger groups a first serve and a first shot with a lighter ball.

Questions

What families ask us

What ages and weeks do you serve?

Stopwatch is for boys and girls ages 6 to 13, in six summer weeks from early June to mid-July. Campers can book one week or several, and groups are made by age.

Which sports do campers play, and do they need experience?

Soccer, flag football, basketball and volleyball, each twice a week, with relays and a family game on Friday. No experience is needed. Every sport starts from the beginning, and campers play with their own age group.

What happens when it is very hot?

Field blocks are in the morning, water and shade come with every break, and after lunch camp moves into the gym. On a very hot day the morning blocks move indoors too, and we text families before camp opens.

What do we bring?

Athletic shoes, shin guards, a filled water bottle, a hat, sunscreen already on and lunch with a cold pack.

How does pickup work, and who may collect my camper?

An adult on your list signs your camper out at the gym door between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m. We ask for ID until we know you, and we call you if someone new is coming. Campers leave only with a person on the list.

How does tuition work?

We don't print tuition on this site, because it depends on the weeks you book and whether your camper needs early or late care. We are glad to go through it by phone.
